Water Flossers: When to Use One

Water flossers are a type of oral hygiene aid that is used in conjunction with your toothbrush and traditional floss. It’s unique in that it can reach deep gum“pockets” and hard-to-reach places, like between back teeth or around orthodontic appliances.

When used appropriately, a water flosser can help you enjoy better gum health.

Here are some scenarios where you might want to consider investing in one:

Limited Mobility

Someone who has larger hands or arthritis may find it physically impossible to floss around their back teeth. Using a narrow water flosser is a viable alternative for daily cleaning between molars or hard-to-reach spaces.

Fixed Orthodontic Appliances (Braces, etc.)

Orthodontic patients can easily trace the tip of the water flosser around brackets, underwires, and between their teeth. Certain water flosser designs even have interchangeable tips specifically made for cleaning around braces.

Around Dental Bridges and Implants

If it's difficult to weave a floss threader underneath a fixed bridge or All-on-4implants, your dentist or periodontist may recommend using a water flosser instead. Keeping the gums around those areas healthy is integral to the success of your fixed restoration.

In Deep Periodontal Pockets

Floss only reaches so far below the gums. In deep areas of periodontal pocketing, a water flosser may be able to flush away food debris, plaque, and other residues. Be sure to use the device as directed.

Always Talk to Your Dentist

Everyone's situation is unique. Your dental team will keep special measurements of the tissue attachment levels around your teeth, and be able to tell you where there is excess buildup not being removed with traditional floss. Always listen to their guidance when it comes to when to use a water flosser, especially if you're considering giving up traditional floss for good.
