Probiotics and Oral Health

Probiotics are a form of live microorganisms intended for health benefits within the body. They can be taken for gut health benefits as well as oral health benefits.  Our bodies naturally contain a multitude of bacteria that work for our bodies in a positive manner. When the balance of bacteria is thrown off, probiotics can be taken in supplemental form to help rebalance the body. The most well-known forms of probiotics include gut health focused yogurts, drinks and pill forms.

Oral health probiotics are starting to gain popularity, and for good reason. Research supports the idea that certain strains of bacteria can help support gum health. Research also suggests that those taking the probiotic strain Lactobacillus showed a reduction in bleeding and inflammation responses. If bacteria are properly balanced, your oral health can thrive in harmony.  While these good strains of bacteria can benefit your oral health, they also help to fight off the harmful bacteria.

While using a daily probiotic can be beneficial, it’s also important to understand what can offset the balance of bacteria in your mouth. Harsh hygiene products like alcohol-containing mouthwashes when used daily, can contribute to an imbalance of bacteria in the mouth. Certain foods can also contribute to a negative imbalance of bacteria, including processed carbohydrates, and highly processed sugary foods. These foods can cause an overgrowth of bad bacteria, and in turn, lowers the good bacteria. Those that suffer from dry mouth can also experience an imbalance of bacteria that can affect their oral health.

On a similar note, people who eat these types of food and/or experience dry mouth symptoms are at a statistically high risk for developing dental decay.

For individuals that struggle with balancing bacteria in their mouth, oral probiotics can be a great addition to an oral hygiene routine.
